The Do’s and Don’ts of Building a Severyn New Home

Building a home can be a stressful, yet an exciting task. There are many things to consider when building a new home, including budget, location, what plan works for your family, design options, and what your role is during the construction of your new home.  To make it a rewarding experience, here are a few do’s and don’ts that can help our homebuyers through the process.

DO communicate with the Severyn Development team.

Communication is one of the most important aspects of any project. If you want your dream home to become a reality, you need to share your ideas and ask questions!  Severyn Development uses a program called Buildertrend, which allows us to communicate with our homebuyers throughout the building process (prior, during, and after construction).  We can directly message with our customers, send daily progression photos of the build, share important documents, and request/process change orders.  We encourage you to ask as many questions as possible along the way. We want you to be confident with your decisions.

DON'T hold back your ideas on what you want your home to look like

Building a home comes with countless options, so it is very important to speak up about your wants and needs during the plan and design phases. We work very closely with our homebuyers to ensure they get the house they want.  This includes finding the right location, customizing our floor plans to fit their needs, and discussing customized options. When designing and building a custom home, especially if you are budget conscience, it is important to prioritize your needs and wants.  Some custom options must be done during construction and others can wait a few years to do.  It’s all about your budget!

DON’T forget to build for your needs – Including the future!

When you’re thinking about your dream home, think about what you need now AND what you’ll need in the future. Are you planning to start a family sometime after moving in? Will you be responsible for caring for aging parents? Are your children about to leave the nest? Perhaps you’re even planning to adopt a new furry friend. Whatever your future may bring, it’s important to think ahead and reflect those changes (the best you can) in the plans for your new home construction. Building now for future changes can help you save money since you won’t have to make major alterations (or even move once again!) later down the road.

DO take advantage of the walk throughs.

Let the Severyn team walk you through your property as it is being built. Use these opportunities to ask questions! Building your first home doesn’t have to be scary; it can be fun when you have the right team to helping you.  We do ask that you don’t show up unannounced to your new home.  Construction sites can be dangerous for those who are not familiar with the project. A wrong step could send you falling through an unfinished floor. If you want to visit your home construction site outside of the scheduled walk throughs, please make sure you talk with your field supervisor first so they can ensure your safety.

DON’T rush the build schedule.

One of the most frustrating things with building a home can be the time that it takes to finish the job. In the meantime, you are probably living in a rental or with the in-laws, so naturally you want your new home to be completed as soon as possible. You need to be patient and allow your Severyn Team to work at their set pace. Rushing us will not help in any way. Any quality Home Builder will refuse to be rushed. Specialty trades need time to complete a quality job and you don’t want your trimmer to rush or the end result will not be what you are expecting.
